Colour iPods and Flakey Hard Drives

I currently own an iPod with Color Display. I love it. I think it is one of the best iPods Apple has ever made. I like the size, the weight, the capacity and the display. I wouldn’t think of taking it jogging with me. That’s what my shuffle is for. I really do like the touch, but I think it’s a whole different class of device. It goes beyond being an iPod. I have given a lot of thought to buying one, but I think 16 GB is just a hair to small. If you are going to be pushing people to watch video on it, I think 20 GB is the entry level for that market. I’m sure it will come soon and when it does, I’ll probably be in line waiting.

Any way, I have a problem with my beloved iPod. I’ve found a bunch others that are having the same problem. Recently I was faced with the sad/dead iPod screen and a whir-click whir-click from the hard drive. After some googling I found a solution that has helped some. In short, make sure it’s turned off and drop it a few feet onto a flat surface. No one else mentioned this, but I tried to make sure it hit as close to being flat as possible. It worked. It happens some what regularly now. Every month or so, but the drop brings it back. I can live with that for now, but I’m sure there’s going to be a day that it will not come back.

Obviously there is some sort of problem with a batch of hard drives. My iPod is way beyond the basic warranty, but I’m curious if there is some sort of hidden warranty out there that Apple is not telling us about. It would be nice for a product that I’ve shelled out $300 for would last for more then 3 years. Come on Apple, help out a loyal consumer and advocate of yours. If any of you know about a hidden warranty that I don’t please post a comment. Myself,
