Bend Over The Rogers iPhone Plans Are Out

As predicted, Rogers is playing fuck the consumer

Rogers says Canadian iPhone 3G plans to start at $60 for 150 mins: “Rogers Wireless, Canada’s exclusive service provider for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 3G handset, announced Friday that monthly service plans for the new touch-screen handset will start at $60 for 150 anytime minutes, 75 outgoing text messages, and 400 me…”

Rogers makes new BlackBerry plans official

According to The Boy Genius… Rogers makes new BlackBerry plans official:

This, to me anyway, is a pretty good indicator that Apple is dictating data plan terms. If not just to Rogers, then to most telcos. We all know that if it were up to Rogers (or any provider) there would be no unlimited data plans.

Rogers has just released a slew of new BlackBerry data plans for your emailing and browsing pleasure. There’sstill no unlimited BIS option, which is a bit confounding given the upcoming unlimited iPhone Data plan, but this is Rogers after all, so we’re not terribly shocked. The new plans breakdown as follows:

  • $30 - 300 MB
  • $60 - 1 Gig
  • $80 - 3 Gig
  • $100 - 6 Gig

Um, yeah. That’s not cheap, though we have a hard time imagining a scenario in which 1 GB of data isn’t enough for average monthly usage, let along 6 GBs. Then again, with the upcoming Bold and its 3G radio, the potential for exorbitant data usage will certainly increase.

Rogers reevaluating plan pricing ahead of iPhone 3G

From a piece over at Infinite Loop, Rogers reevaluating plan pricing ahead of iPhone 3G

Rogers COO Nadir Mohamed told the National Post. “We’ll be changing our prices to reflect that.” He added that Rogers is looking to make its pricing more flexible and easy to understand, and hopes to “drive the adoption of mobile broadband.”

I’ll believe when I see it. The Canadian wireless industry is infamous for playing f&#k the consumer. Especially Rogers as it is the only GSM option coast to coast. If it does happen I would attribute it to being part of their agreement with Apple rather then trying to “drive the adoption of mobile broadband.” I can imagine Steve saying: “You want to charge what? Well screw you, no iPhone for Canada if you make the product look bad like that.” I had heard that the iPhone was supposed to drop up here before Christmas and was pulled at the last second. I imaging it was over just such a point and Rogers though Jobs was bluffing.

iPod Touch Suffering Supply Shortages

In the past product shortages are one of the first signs that an Apple product is readying for an update. They have to do something to make the iPod Touch more appealing with the upcoming release of the iPhone 3g. This is probably the first sign.

.Mac Webmail Issues

Is any one else having problems with .Mac webmail today? It’s been going on all day. I’m having some issues moving messages around and deleting items. Getting lots of pop ups that say that it can’t complete the action. Then again it just might be our firewall/proxy server. I Hope this isn’t a sign of things to come with the new MobileMe webmail and working behind an authenticating firewall.

We’re back!

Ok. We’re back. I’ve switched hosting services. There was an outage for a day or so, but all seems to be back and running now. Hopefully things will be faster now.

New iPod Touch Coming Soon?

With the announcement of the new 3G iPhones to drop on July 11th I would think we should be seeing a new iPod touch soon too. According to MacRumors Buyers Guide, it is due for a refresh soon.

The main thing I would like to see it inherit would be the GPS. That would be the clincher for me to buy one as my iPod is still acting flakey and my cell phone contract doesn’t expire till Nov of 2009.

I doubt they will refresh them on July 11th. I think it will be more around the back to school time frame.

iPhone 3G: What is A-GPS?

I was watching the keynote the other day and noticed that when Steve was talking about the GPS capabilities of the new iPhone he was mentioning cell towers and wifi. I went to the Apple site and noticed this:

The Podophile blog and Gizmodo seem to have cleared things up a little. iPhone 3G: What is A-GPS?

When I first saw the Assisted GPS thing, I assumed it was a cheaped out dumbed down version of GPS. Kind of like the “Server Grade” hard drive in the Time Capsule. Now that it’s been explained a bit more it sounds like a good thing. Time will tell I suppose.

.Mac Down

Seems the .Mac services are down.  Can’t get into my Web Mail or address book.  Jives with one rumor.  Just waiting for the redirects to me.com or mobileme.com.

Update:  It appears to be back up and the same as before.  Maybe just a hickup?
